FLAX
TO LINEN
SUMMER 2009
For adults or teenagers who want to
understand where linen comes from- beginning with planting seeds into
the ground.
We’ll meet about seven times, some shorter and some longer, since
we’ll be scheduled by the growth and processing of the plants.
We’ll start in April when we plant the seeds. Then in three
weeks we’ll have a weeding session. About two months after
planting we’ll harvest the plants and set them to
dry. Two weeks later we will begin retting.
Another two weeks will have us drying fiber. And then we can
process.
And spin. And weave a napkin or runner.
We’ll actually start processing while our plants are still
growing (using stored plants from another year). Which will give
time to learn to spin and weave, if these skills are new to you.
This project is limited to four participants (as much for scheduling
realities as for teaching attention). $275 for the series,
including all materials. To register call the farm or visit our
website.
Winterberry Farm is a small family
teaching farm. We raise a lot of our own food and we offer very small
programs for families, for kids and for adults; we provide a place
where people of different faiths—and people seeking
faith—can reflect upon and share their call to care for the earth.
